"As far as I can tell, they're completely devoid of any offensive branding."

Gettin' All Pantsy
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Wednesday August 28, 2002

It would seem my months-long pants drama has come to an end. For those of you joining us already in progress, we'll do one of those network drama-type openings.

Previously on ThereGoesJohn's Pants...

I wanted a pair of those convertible pants where the legs zip off and they look like ordinary shorts. That way I'm carrying a pair of pants and get a pair of shorts for no extra weight or space.

The only problem is they don't offer a variety of sizes. On the first, the pants were long enough, but when you zipped off the legs the shorts were too short. I likened it to the British infantry (pictured.)

So those went back. Then came the ExOfficio's. The shorts were fine, but the pants were too short. So they went back. And today the Patagonias came. I got the last pair anywhere on the internet, I think. Nobody but Sierra Trading Post had my size, and they disappeared from their site just after I ordered.

"This labels-even-on-pants nonsense"
They're perfect. They're 34" inseam and the shorts are just right. And as far as I can tell, they're completely devoid of any offensive branding. (Have you noticed the extent to which even Ralph Lauren has caved to this labels-even-on-pants nonsense? J. Crew and maybe Gap seem to be the last holdouts... and even they have their logo plastered across a lot of their clothes.)

"It's totally stupid, but a little funny."
So here's the real reason this site was "on hiatus" for a while. It's totally stupid, but a little funny. Now that I've enrolled at a college, I ordered my International Student ID card. It's the thing that gets all these discounts, especially on airfares.

I emailed a scan of my class schedule off to a student travel company as proof of my newly-acquired student status so they could issue me the card. As I hit the send button, I realized Yahoo mail was gonna append my signature to the email and that my signature has a link to ThereGoesJohn.com, which makes it perfectly clear that I'm not exactly gonna be a full time student this fall.

So on the slight chance that somebody at the ID card company might click that link, I eliminated the whole site. Actually, just the homepage. If you'd had a bookmark for any other page, it'd've still worked. But by the time you read this, everything will be fine again. And I hope I'll have a newly-minted ISIC card.|
