The Last Jab
Crescent Springs, Kentucky, USA
Tuesday October 1, 2002

There are definite signs of things winding down. I went to my doctor for my last vaccines today. I got my Polio booster and was supposed to get Typhoid. But there's a funny story about that. They ordered the vaccine and held it for me for a year, but it disappeared recently. I suspect the night cleaning crew had a big Typhoid party recently.

It's OK though. Apparently the oral Typhoid vaccine is better, lasts longer, and is far less painful. (I'm not sure why, but supposedly the Typhoid injection really friggin hurts.) The oral one is four pills taken every other day. It costs $40 and isn't covered. So that kinda sucks.

"Nobody to pick up the slack."
Further evidence of departure approaching: my house is already half empty. The downstairs neighbors moved out over the weekend. My landlord's a little nervous, I think. They're gone and I'll be gone soon. I agreed to show the place for him since he lives in Tahoe.

And as evidence that I'm subconsciously scared to leave... I offered to stay an extra three weeks at work today. They haven't found anybody to replace me yet and I feel bad leaving right at the beginning of November ratings with nobody to pick up the slack.

It would've been impossible for me to think about staying longer even just a month ago. But now that it's October and I've finally started absorbing the fact that it's close, I can accept the idea of staying a couple of weeks longer. I'll know sometime this week if I'm staying. I need the station to put me up since I can't stay here in the apartment. So my boss is seeing if the General Manager will let him spend the money.

"These sandals are like Tevas with sneaker soles."
I'm thinking of picking up a pair of Teva running sandals. They're called Wraptors. Ya see right now my plan is to take my regular Tevas, hiking boots and a pair of running shoes. I don't see how I can cut that down. I wanna do more serious hiking than can be done in running shoes and I wanna go running too. (It seems running's not very popular most places so I'll likely look like a freak, but whatever.) And I can't seriously plan to travel for a year and not have a pair of Tevas.

These sandals are like Tevas with sneaker soles. Seems like they'd be perfect. I could wear them most days and then take them running too. The only problem is they're like $90. Maybe my finder's fee for renting the downstairs apartment will take care of that.

Have ya heard of Josh Joplin? No, no relation to Janis as far as I know. He had a song called "Camera One" a year or so ago that got played a little on stations like 97x (Bam. The future of rock and roll. Yeah, that one.) here in Cincinnati. I like him a lot and just saw that he's gonna be touring starting later this month. Looks like if I stay here a few weeks I may be able to see him on November 11th in Indianapolis or if I leave on time in Pittsburgh on the 17th. That'd be cool. Check out joshjoplingroup.com.

One month from today, by the way. (If I leave on my current schedule.)|
